Porous air fryer tofu tikka bites with roasted peppers and red onion

TL;DR: Air fryer tofu tikka browns when extra-firm tofu is pressed dry and coated with only a thin layer of thick yogurt marinade. Cornstarch and oil help the surface set; space the cubes apart and turn them halfway through cooking.

Extra-firm tofu gets crisp edges in the air fryer with a thin tikka-spiced yogurt coating, cornstarch, bell pepper, and red onion.

Tofu can take on tikka spices, but it does not behave like paneer or chicken. Its surface must be dry enough for the coating to cling and for the air fryer to brown it.

The marinade is deliberately small and thick. It seasons the tofu rather than surrounding it in wet yogurt, while cornstarch helps form a light crust.

What Is Crispy Air Fryer Tofu Tikka Bites?

Air fryer tofu tikka is an Indian-inspired appliance adaptation that seasons tofu with a tikka-style yogurt-and-spice coating and cooks it with circulating hot air.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Extra-firm tofu holds its shape during tossing and turning.
  • A measured marinade avoids steaming the cubes.
  • Cornstarch improves surface dryness and crispness.
  • Bell pepper and onion cook alongside the tofu for a ready-to-serve mix.

Ingredients That Matter

Extra-firm tofu

Press for 10 minutes or dry very thoroughly, then tear or cut into 1-inch pieces.

Greek yogurt

Its thickness matters. Regular yogurt can make the coating too wet.

Cornstarch

A tablespoon binds the coating and helps the exterior set.

Oil

A small amount promotes browning in the dry circulating heat.

Ingredient Swaps

Swap What changes
Unsweetened plant yogurt Use a thick soy or coconut yogurt. Coconut yogurt adds a mild coconut flavor.
Arrowroot for cornstarch It works, though the coating may be slightly less crisp.
No vegetables Cook tofu alone and keep the same spacing; it may finish a minute sooner.

How to Make It

Drying is the first cooking step. Water on the tofu surface has to evaporate before browning can begin.

Use enough marinade to coat, not bathe. A thick paste should cling without dripping through the basket.

Air circulation needs gaps. Turn halfway so different faces meet the hot air, then let the crust set for two minutes before serving.

Success Tips

  • Press before cutting so the cubes do not crumble under the weight.
  • Use a flexible spatula when folding tofu into the marinade.
  • Do not line the basket with solid foil that blocks airflow.
  • Air fryers vary; begin checking at 11 minutes and use browning cues.

Serving Suggestions

Serve as an appetizer with cilantro chutney, tuck into bowls, or add to a salad. Compare the method with air fryer paneer tikka. Explore Air Fryer & Appliances.

Storage and Reheating

Refrigerate within 2 hours and use within 3 to 4 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F until the center reaches 165°F; a microwave softens the coating. Do not leave tofu or yogurt marinade at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1 block 14 ounces extra-firm tofu, pressed or thoroughly dried and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/3 cup plain whole-milk Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger
  • 1 garlic clove finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 small bell pepper cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/2 small red onion separated into 1-inch petals
  • Cilantro and lemon wedges for serving

Method

Instructions
  1. Press the tofu for 10 minutes between clean towels under a light weight, or pat it very dry on all sides. Cut into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a bowl, whisk yogurt, oil, cornstarch, lemon juice, ginger, garlic, garam masala, cumin, paprika, turmeric, and salt into a thick paste.
  3. Add tofu, bell pepper, and onion. Fold gently until each piece has a thin coating; no puddle of marinade should remain.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 390°F for 3 minutes. Lightly oil the basket if the manufacturer permits.
  5. Arrange the mixture in one layer with space between pieces. Air fry for 12 to 14 minutes, turning the tofu and vegetables at 7 minutes, until the tofu has dry browned edges.
  6. Rest for 2 minutes, then serve with cilantro and lemon. Cook a second batch rather than crowding a small basket.

Notes

  • Press before cutting so the cubes do not crumble under the weight.
  • Use a flexible spatula when folding tofu into the marinade.
  • Do not line the basket with solid foil that blocks airflow.
